I'm Gemma of Gemma May Co, and I am a hand letterer, modern calligrapher and graphic designer based on the Sunshine Coast, Australia.
In September 2015, I discovered the world of calligraphy and lettering, when two of my best friends were getting married. They needed some A-frame chalkboards to sit at the front of the ceremony to read "Welcome to the Wedding of Lecinda & Daniel," and, "Please pick a seat and not a side." The task sounded simple, but it quickly dawned on me that I had noooooo idea what I was doing. But Cinda and Dan knew I could tackle it, shooshed me away and I got to work. It seemed that everyone except me knew that I could pull it off, so I trusted them, and I did!

Creating those chalkboards for my friends introduced me to a whole new world of creativity and passion. The styles, colours, and endless possibilities for creating beautiful pieces for my clients, and the freedom of having a brush or pen in my hand gets my creative juices flowing every single day. I draw my inspiration from my home – from the lush rainforests, endless beach lines, and birds of paradise, from the sunshine and the love I share with my friends and family.
Calligraphy and handlettering bespoke pieces for my clients isn’t just about making words “pretty”, it’s a vehicle to elevate our spoken and written words. It’s a special way to add an extra bit of handmade love to your home, wedding and event; to remind us of the imperfections that make us human but also the beauty we are capable of.
With technology taking over so much of our lives, I believe that we are seeking a natural hand in everything and a roughness that is relatable...
