  • Lettering & calligraphy are two ways to create beautiful type pieces. They use similar tools and applied in similar ways.

    A big difference is the general rules they follow. Calligraphy follows an alphabet like a font does. If a word has multiple letter e’s in it, they’ll probably all look the same. Whereas lettering is less structured and allows more flexibility, and you could have two e’s that look totally different.

    Calligraphy typically uses a dip pen & ink combo with varying nib types to create different styles e.g. pointed or broad nib.

    Lettering uses basically anything, like paint, brushes, digital, pencils, crayons, markers, highlighters.
